Boat based whale watching

Boat trips from the New HarbourExperience the magnificent Southern Right Whales at close range by going on a whale watching cruise with one of the licensed operators. Licensed operators have to adhere to a strict code of conduct and are the only vessels that are allowed to approach the whales up to 50 metres. Bookings can be made through the Hermanus Tourism Bureau (028) 312 2629.

Cage Diving with the Great White Sharks

For the more adventurous traveller, diving with the Great White Sharks must be on top of the “To Do List”. There are several operators offering this unique experience in the waters off Dyer & Seal Island. Unlike the whales, sharks aren’t known to spend a lot of time loafing around in view of the boat and needs a little coaxing to show up at the boatside. The water is “chummed” with a ground up mixture of fish ingredients that will exploit the shark’s amazing sense of smell to bring them up close and personal. Although you’ll definitely get an adrenaline rush from this adventure, it is completely safe inside the diver’s cage. Even viewing the sharks from the boat is an experience that will last a lifetime.
